Preview Panes

Outlook 98 and 2000 come with a fully functional built-in preview pane. You don't really need any of these utilities, but might want to try Chilton Preview anyway.

We recommend that Microsoft Exchange client or Windows Messaging users get Deming Preview.

Tools

Chilton Preview   Microsoft Outlook's AutoPreview lets you see just the first three lines of messages. This tiny add-on puts a third pane on your Outlook 97/98 window, to let you scroll through entire messages without opening them. You can copy text from the preview pane and click on Internet URLs and e-mail addresses to launch your browser or a new message. Shareware.
Deming Preview   Originally created by Deming Software, this excellent preview pane for Microsoft Exchange and Windows Messaging is now available free here in the Gallery. Version 1.03, 885kb, 23 May 96 (added to the Gallery 25 May 98). Click here to download the self-extracting file. Do not use with Microsoft Outlook; use Chilton Preview instead.
Foxit PDF Preview Handler   For those who use Foxit Reader, not Adobe, for PDFs, there is a PDF preview handler available for Outlook 2007 and Vista.
Three-Pane Preview Extension for Outlook 97   Use this extension to display an entire mail message at the bottom of a view without opening it. Also adds a command to the File menu to check the size of your folders. Doesn't include hotlinks or the ability to copy from the preview pane. (Microsoft Office Update)
