What you need to know about Windows 98

For Exchange, Outlook and Windows Messaging users planning to install Windows 98, here are the top 3 issues:
  • The Office 97 Service Release 1 patch may not work under Windows 98.
  • Windows Messaging and Microsoft Fax join the ranks of "unsupported programs."
  • Windows 98 supports 10-digit dialing, at least in North America.
  • Windows 98 and Office SR-1

In some circumstances, if you apply the Office 97 Service Release 1 patch after upgrading to Windows 98, the Office files are not upgraded -- and you get no warning of this, other than some entries in the patch log.

What happens is that a new Windows 98 utility, called Walign, kicks in and changes the Office files so they'll load faster; it aligns them to sector boundaries on your hard drive. However, this alters them sufficiently for the SR-1 patch to reject and not update them. For details on this issue, see the MSKB article OFF97: SR-1 Patch May Not Work Under Microsoft Windows 98.

How do you avoid this problem? Use any of these methods to bring your copy of Office 97 up to at least the SR-1 level:

  • Install the SR-1 patch before installing Windows 98.
  • If you already have installed Windows 98, remove Office 97, reinstall it, then immediately install the SR-1 patch.
  • Remove Office 97, then use the Office SR-2 Replacement CD to completely reinstall. You can do this before or after upgrading to Windows 98.

    Goodbye to Windows Messaging

The release of Windows 98 brings the end of Windows Messaging as the basic e-mail package in Windows, replaced by Outlook Express. This is going to come as a shock to organizations that upgrade to Windows 98 from Windows for Workgroups and suddenly find that their workgroup mail and shared fax components are no longer part of the operating system. The necessary components are included on the Windows 98 CD, however, and can be installed separately on each machine. See Installing Windows Messaging under Windows 98.

Alternatively, you may want to consider upgrading to Microsoft Outlook 97 or Outlook 98. See Upgrading to Outlook under Windows 98.

    Windows 98 and 10-digit Dialing

So much has been and will be written about Windows 98 that we're not going to weigh in with yet another opinion about whether you should upgrade or not. There is one buried improvement that may be compelling to North American users -- built-in support for 10-digit dialing of specific area codes. See 10-digit Dialing under Windows.
