Microsoft Fax - How to make it work under
Windows 95
google ad 120x240 white banner - Outlook pages
The secret to
getting fault-free performance with Microsoft Fax in
Windows 95 appears to lie in applying the right patches
and updates, in the right sequence. The following
procedure can be used with pre-OSR2 machines. Do not apply
any of these updates to a machine running Windows 95b
(OSR2). This procedure is time-consuming, but it does seem
to result in a cure of most known problems.
Many thanks to MVP
Athena for painstakingly researching and providing the
detailed step-by-step information. For CompuServe users,
the required patches and Microsoft Knowledgebase articles
have been collected in a self-extracting file named
Faxpack.exe, found in Section 10 of the MSWIN95 forum.
These instructions are for Windows 95. If you are
running Windows 98, please see Microsoft
Fax - Setup.
Step 1
Backup your mail and address book data
Use File | Exit and Log Off to quit
Exchange, Windows Messaging or Microsoft Outlook.
Create a new Windows 95 system folder with a
distinctive name, such as \Mymail.
Open this new folder.
Use Start | Find to locate your
*.pst (Personal Folders) file(s).
When the results appear, right-click on each file,
then select Copy. Point to your new
folder, right-click and choose Paste
to place the the file in it. (Or you can hold down the
Ctrl key and drag the .pst files to the new folder.)
If you have duplicate *.pst file names, create
subfolders as needed in your \Mymail folder, and copy
the duplicates there.
Use Start | Find to locate your *.pab
(Personal Address Book) files and copy them to \Mymail,
too.
Step 2
Gather necessary files and documents.
To make it easy to work with the various files
involved, create a new folder on your desktop and name it
Faxfix. (Point to empty space on the desktop, then
right-click and choose New | Folder.) Use
this folder for all the files you will be downloading in
this section.
Use Start | Find to locate MLset32.exe
and copy it to your Faxfix folder. If you cannot find it,
you can follow the directions later
to retrieve it from your Win95 CD if it is needed.
Check your Windows 95 version level by right-clicking
on My Computer and selecting Properties,
then proceed as follows to get the files you need:
If you have this
version:
You will need:
4.00.950 (b)
You should not need any
patches or updates.
4.00.950
(a)
Download these free
post-Service Pack 1 patches. The first four are from
Microsoft's web site.
If you will not be using Microsoft Outlook, this
patch is optional. The update improves performance,
but it also "breaks" the Remote Mail
(ability to preview mail headers and selectively
download mail items) processing option for CompuServe
Mail. Many users have also reported problems with CSi's
MIME processing with this version.
If you will be installing Outlook, you must install
this update to avoid the General Error! message when
using the subject line on fax cover pages. Although
Outlook will update Windows Messaging with yet another
version, this intermediate version is necessary to get
Microsoft Fax to work properly.
Over time, your system registry
can become bloated with unnecessary entries from
long-removed applications. The
RegClean
utility helps weed out these unnecessary or erroneous
entries.
The following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles may be
useful:
Remove old Microsoft Exchange, Windows Messaging and
Microsoft Outlook installations.
If you have installed Microsoft Outlook as part of
Microsoft Office 97, choose Control Panel |
Add/Remove Programs, highlight Microsoft
Office 97, then click Install/Uninstall.
That will start the Office 97 setup program. When it
has initialized, select Add/Remove components
then clear the box for Outlook and proceed. You do not
need to remove other Office 97 components, just those
for Outlook. When prompted about removing Windows
Messaging, you want to REMOVE everything.
If you have installed Microsoft Outlook as a
standalone program or as part of Microsoft Exchange
Server 5.0 , choose Control Panel | Add/Remove
Programs, highlight Microsoft Outlook, then
click Install/Uninstall. When
prompted about removing Windows Messaging, you want to
REMOVE everything.
If you previously installed the Windows Messaging
update, run the update's Exupdusa.exe program (the
program you downloaded to install Windows Messaging),
and choose Remove from the options you see.
If you previously installed the Microsoft Exchange
Server client, choose Control Panel |
Add/Remove Programs, highlight Microsoft
Exchange, then click Install/Uninstall.
If prompted about removing shared components, say Yes
to removing the Windows Messaging components, but No
to removing other shared components.
Choose Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs
| Windows Setup, and clear the boxes for
Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Fax options. Note
that this will also remove the Microsoft Network
component.
Delete any Microsoft Exchange or Windows Messaging
files and folders. Look under C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Exchange, C:\Exchange, C:\Program
Files\Windows Messaging and so on.
Reboot.
Step 4
Install and use RegClean to fix any errors in your
system registry.
Install RegClean, plus the OLE Automation system
libraries if you are not using Office 97. A new item
will be added to your main Programs menu.
Run RegClean. The program will first extract any
errors it finds. Be sure to click Fix Errors
to have the fixes applied.
When the errors have been fixed, use Start
| Find to locate the files named Undo*.reg.
Right-click any .reg file and choose Print
to get a list of the changes that were made. (Do not
double-click the file; that will put the errors back
into your registry.)
You can use the Undo*.reg files to restore the
changes if you find that a program has been negatively
impacted by the RegClean process.
Run RegClean again after a few days. You may find
that multiple passes will be required to fix all of
the errors.
Step 5
Apply the Windows 95 update and patches.
Now, switch to your \Faxfix folder to install all the
files you gathered in Step 2. The
order is critical.
If you require Service Pack 1 (your Windows 95
version does not have a letter), double click on the
Setup.exe icon to install the service pack.
Reboot.
After you apply Service Pack 1, or if your system
was already at Windows 95 version 4.00.950 (a), you
must install the first three patches post-SP1
patches. Double-click on the Oleupd.exe,
Krnlupd.exe and Mspwlupd.exe icons to install the
three patches. You can wait to reboot until you have
applied all three.
Re-install Microsoft Exchange (the Windows 95
operating system version) and Microsoft Fax, following
the instructions in
Q152196
- How to Install and Use Microsoft Fax. When you
add Personal Folders to the mail profile, be sure to
click Browse to modify the path and
point to your old folders in the Mymail folder you
created in Step 1. If you had
additional .pst files, you can add more sets of
Personal Folders; set the path to the other folders
you copied in Step 1. You must have a Personal Address
Book in your profile if you want to be able to use all
functions of Microsoft Fax. When you add it, you can
use the Browse function to point to
an existing Personal Address Book.
In Control Panel | Mail and Fax,
check the Delivery tab to be sure
that incoming mail will be delivered to your main
Personal Folders.
Execute MLset32.exe. If you
cannot find MLset32.exe on your system, extract it
from your CD according to the directions in MSKB
article Q129605:
Using the Windows 95 Extract Tool. You can also
extract the file using the Cabinet
Viewer from the Windows 95 Power Toys collection
of very useful utilities.
Double-click the Inbox icon on the desktop to run
Exchange and check to see that your old items are
there.
Test all the basic Microsoft Fax functions --
sending, receiving, viewing, and so on. Be sure to
send from both the Fax Wizard and from a program such
as Word.
When you are sure that the fax function works, use File
| Exit and Log Off to close Exchange and
apply the Imaging for Windows 95 patch that you
gathered in Step 2.
Use Control Panel | Mail and Fax to
add any mail services you were previously using back
to your mail profile This includes Microsoft Mail, Internet
Mail or Compuserve Mail. If you did not have
Compuserve Mail before and would like to add it, you
can download a separate setup document (Csmailsu.rtf)
from the CSAPPS forum or the Email
Client Support Forum later.
Test all your mail functions, sending and receiving
with each mail service.
Step 6
Apply Windows Messaging update
Do not apply the Windows
Messaging update until you are sure that all functions
of Microsoft Fax are working properly
Do not apply the Windows Messaging Update if (a) you
will not be using Microsoft Outlook and (b) you want to be
able to view your CompuServe mail headers for selective
download
Be sure to apply the Windows Messaging update if you
will be using Outlook or a new Corel product.
Run the self-installing Exupdusa.exe file from your
\Faxfix folder. It will create a new Windows Messaging
subfolder in your C:\Program Files folder.
Move the Mlset32.exe program from the C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Exchange folder to this new folder,
delete the old Microsoft Exchange folder.
Test the Inbox Repair Tool, found at Start
| Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Inbox Repair
Tools to be sure that the shortcut is
pointing to the new folder. If it is not, you will
have to update the shortcut.
Retest your fax functions for a final time.
Everything should be working properly.
Step 7
Re-install the Microsoft Exchange Server client, if
you need it rather than basic Windows Messaging.
This step is necessary only if (a) you are not planning
to install Microsoft Outlook and (b) you need to connect
to Microsoft Exchange Server:
Run the setup program for the Microsoft Exchange
Server client provided by your system administrator.
Retest your fax functions for a final time.
Everything should be working properly.
Check to see whether a new C:\Exchange folder was
created on your system. If so, that's the new location
for Exchange. You can delete the C:\Program
Files\Windows Messaging folder.
Step 8
Apply the Fax Cover Page Fix or replacement
Awfxcg32.dll.
If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or
5.0, copy the Awfxcg32.dll that you downloaded to your
Windows\System folder.
If you do not use MSIE 4.0 or 5.0, double-click on the
Cover_pg.exe patch in your Faxfix folder to install it.
Reboot, then test Microsoft Fax after Windows restarts.
Step 9
Reinstall Microsoft Outlook.
Outlook uses the profiles you have created for Windows
Messaging for its basic mail and fax functions. For
Outlook 98 and Outlook 2000, you must make sure that
Outlook installs in Corporate/Workgroup
mode.
If you originally installed Microsoft Outlook as
part of Microsoft Office, choose Control Panel
| Add/Remove Programs. Highlight Microsoft
Office, then click Install. When the Setup program
initiates, select Add/Remove components,
then add Outlook to your Office installation.
If you originally installed Microsoft Outlook from
a separate CD or network installation point, run the
setup program you find there.
Retest all fax functions. You must have the
Personal Address Book service in your profile, even if
you do all your faxing to addresses in the Outlook
Contacts folder.
Apply the additional patches for your version of Outlook.
Make sure you have a copy of MLset32.exe in your
\Exchange or \Program Files\Windows Messaging folder.
If not, copy or move the one that you saved in the \Faxfix
folder.
Check one last time to see that any and all
references to duplicate Microsoft Exchange or Windows
Messaging installations have been removed. Whether you
will be using standalone Windows Messaging or Outlook,
you should have one, and only one instance of the
Exchng32.exe mail program. Throw the other in the
recycling bin.
Run RegClean again to clear out any remaining
registry errors.
Backup the system updates patches from Step 2 onto
diskettes so you will have them if you ever need to
reinstall Windows 95.
Delete the \Faxfix folder.
Notes
If a fax fails
with a "no transport provider" undeliverable
message, use Tools | Options | Delivery
(in Exchange) or Tools | Services | Delivery
(in Outlook) to move Microsoft Fax to the top of the
delivery order list.
If you don't see a Microsoft Fax printer driver, run
Awadpr32.exe to build one. This problem is sometimes seen
when you set up Microsoft Fax on a workstation that's
going to use a network fax modem.
If you can't add Microsoft Fax to an existing profile,
you'll need to edit
Mapisvc.inf to add lines pertaining to Microsoft Fax. Add the following lines and
sections if they're missing:
